Rene Sigman first came to my attention in 2008 at a Hurricane Ike hearing in Galveston. I told Javier Delgado that “this lawyer has her act together.” I then watched as she headed-up Mostyn Law Firm’s litigation department, winning thousands of cases resulting from Hurricane Ike and then in New York following Superstorm Sandy. We are fortunate that she wanted to join our team. She will be a great asset to our current clients, prospective clients, and public adjuster colleagues.
A newspaper article reported the following upon Rene’s admission to the New York Bar:
Sigman has been employed with Mostyn Law since 2001. She is a Senior Associate with the firm and is also Head of Litigation. Ms. Sigman has handled thousands of First Party Litigation cases against insurance companies since her employment with the firm, all of which have been tried or settled. She has trial experience and has tried cases, including First Party Bad Faith and Underinsured Motorist (UIM) cases against insurance companies. Ms. Sigman has also handled personal injury cases, predatory lending practices cases against mortgage companies, and construction defect cases. She has been named to the Super Lawyers, Texas Rising Star list consecutively since 2010 to the present.
. . .Sigman was an Adjunct Professor at South Texas College of Law from 2005 to 2008, teaching Mock Trial Litigation under South Texas’s Advocacy Director and Associate Dean T. Gerald Treece. She has always been active in the advocacy program at South Texas College of Law and continues to support the program.
Rene was instrumental in obtaining the testimony showing the fraudulent engineering reports were designed to underpay flood claims following Superstorm Sandy. While she received little credit for it, because of her efforts, thousands of flood victims’ claims were again reviewed and paid by the National Flood Program. I expect her dogged tenacity will tremendously benefit Merlin Law Group clients in the future.
Rene will join other full time Texas-based lawyers at Merlin Law Group. Jeff Zane is a Merlin Law Group attorney with a Ph.D. from Notre Dame and a law degree from NYU. Jeff lives in Austin. Two other Texas attorneys will join Rene in the Houston office this week.
When I first spoke with Rene about her desire to join us, I asked what she likes best about representing policyholders. She replied, “beating the insurance companies that denied the claims.” But she also told me that she “feared losing a case more than anything. That is why I work so hard.”
Positive Thought For The Day
Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.
