If you have been following this blog for a while, you are well aware that Hurricane Sandy has had a momentous impact on the insurance industry here in New Jersey. However, when looking into the details of the industry impact and tremendous loss to property, it is easy to overlook the environmental impact.
According to a recent article in Nature World News, several agencies are now remapping the sea floor and the coastlines after Sandy. The impact of the storm will not to just change lives, but maps as well. The changing of the maps should remind us to be prepared. "The human deaths and the powerful landscape-altering destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy are a stark reminder that our nation must become more resilient to coastal hazards," said Kevin Gallagher, associate director for Core Science Systems at U.S. Geological Survey.
It will be interesting to see how many new lines Sandy has drawn on our maps. Finally, in preparing for this week’s post, I came across this site which contains some stunning cell phone pictures of the damage caused by Sandy. I thought it was an interesting juxtaposition of using the technology of man to document the vulnerability of man.
