In case you haven’t seen the news, Senator Mike Fasano, one of Florida’s most vocal and effective advocates on insurance issues, recently announced his intention to run for the Florida State House of Representatives. This, of course, comes as welcome news to all those who have fought against the insurance industry’s tireless lobbying efforts.
Winner of last year’s Policyholder Advocate of the Year award, Senator Fasano has proven time and time again that with effective leadership and a strong voice of opposition, Florida’s policyholders can actually win battles with the multi-billion dollar insurance industry.
Most recently, Senator Fasano led the charge to defeat a bill that would have allowed unregulated, out of state surplus line carriers to participate in Citizens Property Insurance Corporation’s takeout program.
As the longest serving legislator in all of Pasco County, Senator Fasano was barred for running for reelection to the Senate seat he has held since 2002. Instead, he is running for a seat in the State House where he began his political career – a job he held from 1994 to 2002 – eventually rising to the rank of Majority Leader from 2000 to 2001.
There is still much that needs to be done in Florida to bring greater protections to our most vulnerable,” Senator Mike Fasano said in a written statement. “Our elderly, those on fixed incomes, working families and owners of small businesses struggling to make ends meet all need someone who is not afraid to stand up to the special interests in Tallahassee. If the people of Pasco County will allow me to continue representing them I will work tirelessly on their behalf.
It goes without saying that we’re excited to see Senator Fasano’s continued advocacy on behalf of his Pasco constituents and indeed all of Florida’s 8 million policyholders.
