We can all agree that the year 2020 has broken many records and hurricane season has not been an exception. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) this year’s hurricane season has been the most active on record.1
To date (November 17) there have been 31 tropical storms, of which thirteen have become hurricanes—the most recent being Hurricane Iota, a Category 5 hurricane that is set to strike Central America early this morning, while they are still trying to recover from Hurricane Eta’s devastating landfall less than two weeks ago.
In the United States, the previous record was 28 storms in 2005. That year, Florida became the state hit by the most hurricanes in one season—including Hurricanes Emily, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. This year, Louisiana took the new record with five named storms to make landfall in one season.
Hurricane season is set to last two more weeks. With that being said, do not let your guard down—be prepared. Last week, storm/hurricane Eta surprised Florida with a severe change in landfall and intensity, in addition bringing lots of rain that caused flooding to many residential and commercial areas on the west coast. This is why you should be prepared throughout the entire hurricane season.
Have on-hand a copy of your policy, confirm all payments have been made, be aware of your coverage and damages excluded, have an inventory of your property, take pictures before and after a storm. If any damage occurs, make your claim on time and provide the required information to the carrier. Also, get several estimates of your property’s damage. Be prepared and stay safe.
