Remember the old EF Hutton commercials with the point being: “When EF Hutton talks, people listen”? That is how I feel about Merlin Law Group attorney Ed Eshoo when Ed makes a point about property insurance law.
Ed Eshoo will be taking over the Tuesday at Two With Chip tomorrow afternoon. His topic is “The Ten Most Common Mistakes Made by Public Adjusters During an Insurance Claim.” If you are a public insurance adjuster wanting to learn your craft, I would suggest you make certain to tune into this discussion.
Ed works out of our Chicago office and here is a little bit about him, as indicated on our website:
Following his two-year judicial clerkship for Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Howard C. Ryan, Edward Eshoo, Jr. began his legal career in 1987 representing insurance companies in life, health, and disability insurance claims and litigation.
Since 1990, Ed has dedicated his practice to assisting policyholders with their insurance claims. He has successfully coordinated the investigations of over 1,000 claims regarding insurance recovery and related litigation. He has negotiated, adjusted, prosecuted, and/or tried first party and third-party insurance claims ranging from fire, explosion, tornado, hurricane, hail, theft, vandalism, frozen plumbing/water damage, and mold to defective construction and construction products. By virtue of his background and experience, he is sensitive to the myriad of issues that arise during the insurance claims process; issues which potentially bog down and stall the claims process. His vast experience includes national and international policyholder representation in risk management/disaster recovery and property insurance coverage matters. Ed also has served as a member of Plaintiff Steering Committees in MDL class action lawsuits regarding defective windows.
Ed currently served as Co-Chair of the Bad Faith Litigation Group for the American Association for Justice (formerly known as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America). He previously served as the Chair of its Insurance Law Section. Ed also is a Certified Mediator.
As a former college basketball player, Ed coaches AAU Girls Basketball. Ed’s son, Eddie, was a walk-on for the University of Dayton Men’s basketball team. His daughter, Emily, played for the University of Tampa Women’s basketball team. Ed resides in Naperville, Illinois with this wife of 29 years, Libby.
Ed is a regular contributor to the blog, and his post, Does An Insurer Act In “Bad Faith” If It Denies Coverage For A Hail Loss Based On Its Retained Engineer Defining Hail Damage As Functional Damage?, had the following conclusion which explains Ed’s practical and no-nonsense view about insurance claims:
The district court’s ruling in North Shore Co-Owners’ Ass’n, Inc. should serve as a warning to insurers to stop denying hail and wind damage claims based on an engineering definition of hail or wind damage not supported by the policy or be subjected to a bad faith claim. But nothing will surprise me, as insurers’ repeated failures to do the right thing is what has kept me in business for the past 34 years.
